DESCRIPTION
Air sprung buses couldn’t be more perfect. It is the best suspension in terms of ride quality. No other spring for busare more comfortable. Adjustable height makes it possible to go over obstacles. Air springs have lower weight capacity, but this is hardly a factor when it comes to buses. Buses rarely get near the loading ceiling.
So why are aftermarket air springs for buses not taking off?
To be succinct, what we have here is a matter of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Bus companies don’t see any significant benefit to air springs and air suspension as a whole. Installation of air suspension requires major work and is a very costly undertaking. Spending for aftermarket air springs will be nothing but a money drain. Even for those who are interested in the technology, instead of upgrading the springs of old buses, they can just wait until they need to purchase new units with air springs right out of the factory.
Many bus companies today are sticking with leaf springs. While comfort is good, simplicity in maintenance and reliability is better. A large number of buses are town or city buses. And with road quality improving, there isn’t as much need for the damping of air springs. City bus passengers also spend a very short amount of time in buses, making comfort or discomfort quite insignificant.
With its expensiveness and the profit-centered mindset of the public transport, it is very hard to see aftermarket air springs taking off very soon.
